The HPV vaccine series is at age 11 for both boys and girls because that's BEFORE most kids become sexually active. Waiting until the kid is sexually active to give the HPV vaccine series is like waiting until the kid has been in a room with a kid with measles to give the measles vaccine.

Also, explaining the mechanics of sex to kids before they hear misinformation from other kids on the playground does not promote teenage (or tween-age) sexual activity.

There is a panic here, that's why. Were your kids sexually active at age 11? Doctors recommend the vaccine at age 11 so that is what we will do, but wow, there is a panic here.

Studies of HPV vaccine indicate that younger adolescents respond better to the vaccine than older adolescents and young adults. Finally, there is no evidence that receipt of HPV vaccine increases the chance that a child will become sexually active.

PPs have mentioned discussing the mechanics of sex, speaking up if someone touches you inappropriately, porn not reflecting real life, etc. but one missing piece of the puzzle is sexual desire. I engaged in some sexual behaviors at an an age that makes me sick to think about now, as an adult. When we talk about kids being too experimental, too young, we tend to focus on parenting and peers. I can assure you that my home life was stable, intact, and healthy, and my friends were fine. I still did things with boys I should not have done, because the feelings I felt were overwhelming. I felt powerless to stop myself - just incredibly, incredibly horny. Hormones can be so powerful. We need to send the message that this is normal - but it's better to walk away than give in.

I didnt lose my virginity until 25 to my grad school bf lol. I discovered porn and masturbation around 9/10. I'm happy I discovered the latter but perhaps less so the former. I only have myself to blame. Was curiosity and nothing more.

From OP - I had a very honest and loving talk with my DD last night. Thank you for all the good advice, minus the judgemental posts. I don't need advice about vaccinations. I have very good pediatrician I trust for those topics. Thank you.

He handled it really well -- told her what he had found and that it was natural to be curious, but that the internet wasn't the right place to get that information and she should talk to him or her mom.

He was visiting them in another state when it happened -- so I was at home googling what he told me she had been googling. OMbabyjesus!
