This is definitely NOT true at Lowell. One K class of 12 has 4 AA children, 2 Latino and one Asian. This K class is pretty representative of the rest of the school.

At the risk of detouring the thread ... which mainstream independents in NWDC -do- encourage 2e students and work really well with them? Maret? How about Sidwell, does Sidwell admit and handle kids with learning disabilities? St. Albans?

about your second point, that IS interesting. being parent of an incoming Ker i had to be a huge part of the process, and i really enjoyed the admissions experience at one school much more so than at the other.

I applied to both of these schools for my child and was struck at how warm the admissions process was at each. They both seemed to want to know my child and our family.

Looking back on it, I think both schools want to be sure that the family is on board with the progressive education model. In the parent interviews, each asked what we wanted from our child's education, what types of activities we did together as a family, etc.

In contrast, neither asked me or my spouse what we did for a living or where we went to school (which were asked on applications at other schools). I found that refreshing.

Lowell can not handle 2e kids (nor Sheridan in my opinion). We have first-hand experience with both.

Can't say what they do today, but Sheridan two years ago absolutely could not handle 2e kids.

Can either handle 2e kids?

This actually isn't true of sheridan. No idea about Lowell. Thinking this pp went on some tours and tried hard to quickly guess the ethnicities of the kids in the many photos posted all over the school hallways

When was the last time you were in either school? As a previous poster said, this does not reflect either school's population today, either in terms of race or family incomes.

Current K Sheridan class of 24 kids has 11 children of color and two same-sex parent families. They are walking the walk in terms of diversity both in terms of admissions and curriculum. It was a major reason why we chose the school.
