Oh, also I once found a $100 bill in the grocery store. I brought it to customer service and the man who had dropped it was there asking if anyone had found it. He was so grateful and I was so glad that I had found it as opposed to someone who would not have turned it in.

I would take it in to the store.
More than once I've left my wallet in a grocery cart while transferring bags to the car and each time (2 or 3 times in 10 years) it's been turned into the customer service desk. Probably by the grocery store workers, but maybe by other customers.

Not to mention not everyone in DC is a high earner. It might behoove some people to know that the cost of daycare or a nanny is more than the mom's salary. Sure you can argue about the long term benefit of working while losing money or breaking even, not just considering mom's income, etc. but most people simply can't afford to live that way.

I was unloading my basket one day and saw a box of canisters under a basket. After I unloaded I attempted to bring the box inside the store but they wouldn't let me without a receipt.
Waited in the parking lot for a few minutes in case someone came back for them but they didn't so I gave them to my DIL. I felt bad about it but just the week before my box of ice pops were taken after I drove away forgetting them and recently my ponytail bands were left in the bag at the counter. Somebody got my stuff.
Doesn't excuse what I did but I wanted to do the right thing. Oh well.

Once upon a time I drove off with a case of Propel on my roof. I drove around the parking lot and 5 minutes later, someone was putting it into their trunk. They actually said, "finders keepers" since they said I couldn't prove it was mine.

People do suck - I'm sorry, OP. I know what it's like to have limited opportunities to treat yourself, and for it to disappear really sucks.
My daughter lost her blanket in a department store ("HER blanket", as in can't sleep or go anywhere without it). I realized it within minutes but it was nowhere to be found. It never showed up in lost or found either. Things don't just disappear - people take them or or too lazy to show simple kindness. It's the worst.

I've always returned things. Right before one Christmas I was leaving ToysRUs and find a brand new gaming console in the bottom of a shopping carriage. I returned it back to the store. I just hoped the person who left it, came back for it. They're so expensive and that could really ruin the holidays.
I seem to find lots of wallets too and have always been able to track down their owners.
But one time I did find a $50 bill on the sidewalk. I kept that. How was I going to find who lost that?
