My DW had been the whole time in our current home for 10 years. All of sudden there was a clog at the main line which cause our toilet to overflow.
Had to call plumber to clear main line which surprise there was all these old tampons (over 50) and gunk.

She learned her lesson. I never laughed so hard when the guy showed me the evidence.

Certainly shouldn't do it if you have a septic system

Only flush them at work, school and public restrooms.

because that really is how these things were sold to us for years - that was why they were so great. Practically no mess.

No. not flusable. Sure they can go down but you will have plumbing problems.

They do not flush and flow to sewer as easily as the smaller toilets (not enough water flowing them along their way)- so you are increasing the chance of clogging. PLus, they have to be removed at the treatment center- using up more resources. I don't flush mine anymore as a result.

I didn't know this as a young woman and learned the hard way. flushed them while staying with a friend and her dad came out, who the hell flushed a tampon down the toilet?

Never flushed one since.

If you google/amazon search for "tampon disposal bags" you can get 500 of them for $40 and they are biodegradable. I prefer them over toilet paper

Even if it is not clogging YOUR pipes, they are causing problems down the line and/or at the wastewater treatment plants. The only thing that should be flushed, aside from human waste, is toilet paper.

Have you ever taken that field trip to the solid waste treatment facility? You see everything that people flush - goes into a separate section. It's a good outing - if you or your kids did not go to one on a field trip, it's a good idea to go. Very important to see.
