I think if you want to, go for it. Some people might roll their eyes, but most people won't care. And even if they do, it's not theirs to care about. It's your body and you get to decorate it any way you see fit. One of the best things about being 40ish is no longer caring what anyone else thinks!

I understand your urge, OP.

I actually had the same urge when i moved to a very conforming and competitive suburb here (aren't they all?)

But before you do anything, ask yourself what you are really trying to address.

For me, it was the feeling that I was being cut off from a creative/artistic/non-conformist community. So I sought that out and it wasn't easy to find (still struggling) but now that I have more outlets for my non-conformist side I no longer have the urge to punch a hole in my body.

Agree. The one thing that surprises me ( or not!) is how little global exposure people have. Nose studs have been part of Indian culture for hundreds of years. Ear lobes and the nose are prime acupressure points that cover a gamut of organs and it is healthy to keep those points stimulated. Small jewelry, studs do just that
In olden india, men had their ears pierced as well.

Yep, a belly button ring that is not displayed either in the OR or in court is definitely the same thing as a septum ring.

I would be concerned that the empty hole left when you remove the ring or stud would look like a giant crater left after removing a massive blackhead.

Depends on where you live, work environment, and your personality. In a crunchy, liberal college town? Go for it.

My aunt got a nose stud when she recovered from her double mastectomy for aggressive breast cancer - she was 62! And it looked great on her. She just has that personality where she can pull it off.

What if OP was indian-american? would that change the responses?

I do think it sound like you are having a mid-life identity crisis. Most will view a new nose ring as a "she must need some attention", it's definitely perceived that way.

There is some good advice posted here: wear a stick on when you go out and about and see how you feel about it. I also agree fully with the poster that you have to have a great facial structure to pull it off nicely.

Maybe color your hair purple or something, do something that you can easily change. You will end up with a large pore/hole if you decide to get the stud and then later remove it.

Honestly- whenever I see a person with a pierced nose, I think about what goes on behind the stud and the stuff that would get caught in it ( I know- it's gross, but I can't help thinking it).
