Yu Ying has about a 5% acceptance rate for preK, so this is largely a moot concern.
Wow, is it that high? Seriously question, I thought last year there were about 3 spots for over 400 applicants (for that grade).

Sadly I agree with this and the more charters that open each year makes it more difficult, especially if they are K-8.

It's not gonna take 10-20 years any more. Too much is changing in DC now for it to take that kind of time. We went from a demographic slump to surge.

It really irks me when people randomly state acceptance rates as if they are indication of total admission rates. Many people apply just because it's free to play lottery. Of the 300+ children on the PK3 WL for YY last year, they are also applying to up to 11 other schools.
NP. PP probably meant that she should worry about it after they get into the school which they most likely won't so don't create problems where none exist.
The thing is if they rank this school first and get in, and decide it's not right, they would be shut out elsewhere.
The PP and her DH need to have a heart to heart.
+1. Someone always "wins" the lottery, so to not rank your choices in true preference order just because the chance of getting in is small is stupid.

Parents should be mature enough to pick a school that works well for the kid, not the parent. If your DH is excited about the target language, but your DS is not going to thrive there then be honest with yourselves and make the right choice for DS.
Well, DH thinks DS will thrive there, and that I am wrong, so that doesn't exactly help.

We got in our second choice in the lottery and I just submitted my application for our younger son to attend the same school, where there are more than enough sibling spots to accommodate him. All our friends in the neighborhood seem happy with where their kids are as well (Petworth - kids go to a mix of charters, IB to Powell, plus a couple OOB to other DCPS). I don't know anyone who got completely shut out, although some did not get one of their top choices. I do also know a couple kids who have switched schools, but don't know anyone who was unable to get in anywhere at all.
