There's a misunderstanding about dress sizes here. For some people, size 10 is heavy because they are built such that they could wear size 6, for example, but they've put on lots of weight. But there are other people, like me, for whom size 10 would be too small. You'd never guess I'm size 12. I suppose it's possible I could get to a size 10 but I would be scary skinny for my bone structure.

My mother is much heavier than I am. I've never been as heavy as she is. She was heavy when I was a kid too (I'm in my 40s and she's early 70s).

I'm lighter than my mother is right now, but I've only had one kid and am in my 30s, my mom had 4 children and is post-menopausal.

+1. She's barely 5 feet tall and has always been around 90-100 lbs. I'd have to be anorexic to be that weight.

Lighter than my mom but I have worked out my whole life and she didn't.

2 things:
1. daughters can take after the dad's side which could be on the heavier side
2. people now a days have crappier diets (more processed foods, etc..) and are less physical than those 50 yrs ago.

All of my sisters and I are skinnier than my mother but her family tends to weigh on the heavier side. I guess we inherited our fat genes from my dad's side, who are skinny.

One sister is starting to become heavier than my mom due to rx medicines.

I'm taller and heavier, but I'd say when my Mom was my age, her BMI was probably the same as mine, and our figures are proportional to our heights. She's slim but likes to eat - just was way ahead of her time in terms of nutrition, doing the no-processed quinoa, kale, tofu thing back in the 80's. As I've aged and gotten more sedentary, I have to watch what I eat a bit. But I'd say we are pretty similar - unsurprising given y'know, genes, and it is surprising to me to hear that people see such discrepancies between mom/kids. I'd say of those friends whose mothers I've met, their weights are roughly consistent. But I'm 40, so I don't know if this trend postdates me.

No, that's not how it works. With vanity sizing, what was a 10 back then would be an 8 or even a 6 today.

if she's short AND 180 lbs AND a size 6/8 today, something doesn't make sense.

My dad is the way too unfortunately. I hate when my children eat meals with them. I have asked them both to just not discuss food or weight with my kids at all because they were starting the "oh my, Suzy! Getting a little tubby!" comments to my 7yo (who was just about to sprout up). Our whole family has food issues (myself included - overeating, eating for comfort) and I'm trying to protect my kids.

^ and my mom was very proud of her anorexic years - "I only weighed 83 lbs at my wedding. Tee hee!"

My mom struggled with her weight growing up, partially owing to her family's "clean plate club" rules. Her mother (my grandma) was tiny & made sure my mom knew that she was ashamed buying "husky" clothes.

I've never had a weight problem, partially owing to my mom's rebellion from what she learned at her dinner table, and teaching us to stop eating when we're full, regardless of how much is on our plates. (Note: I still had plenty of 1980s junk food growing up, so we weren't deprived of anything. Just learned eating in moderation, which is still my rule.)

I probably weigh 20 pounds or so less than mom did at my age, at practically the same height.

My mom is lighter but that was not always the case (I was 20 pounds lighter than her in my 20s when she hit menopause). However, she is 5 inches shorter than me.
