2 weeks ago my daughter’s toenail was just hanging on by the corner. She pulled it off and a new half nail was underneath. Tonight 2 more were the same way, she pulled them slightly and they came off and little half nails were already in place. No injury, no infection. She does wear sneakers and is very active. I’m hoping this is a non-issue.

It is a good thing that the nail was under. How could you possibly not notice this before?! Maybe personal hygiene is not your forte?

Haha, I have a horrible fear of this happening, and it happened around 2 weeks ago, almost exact same experience, same toe, same thing underneath, no injury. For me, it was a "hangnail" that consisted of my whole nail.

I wish my toenails would fall off, instead they remain all ugly with bruises underneath.

I had the same thing happen and there was no injury at all. I looked down at my toe and saw the nail hanging off. I pulled it off and then when I went for a pedicure a day or 2 later, found there was already another nail there. Not to mention, it's summertime so I wear mostly sandals and only wear sneakers while working out about an hour a day.

It's not toenail fungus (onychomycosis). When you get that sort of infection, the toenail becomes thick, ridged, and discolored. It does not just fall off (although you wish it would).

Toenail can come off months after hand/foot/mouth disease, or strep infection, or any high fever. Or is could be trauma so small as to be unremembered, just damaging the nailbed in just the right spot -- like banging a toe on a doorframe two months ago.

Not fungus, though. You'd see the difference.

I'm currently in the process of losing two of my toenails. They are dark purple, and have been for a month.

Yes. I used to run competively. Lost several toe nails and there was always one underneath.

My son and husband, both soccer players, experience this all the time.

Sometimes my son (9) haa a short period of the old nail coming off too soon, but that's because he's a child and won't leave it alone and/or is constantly playing sports.

They are reptiles. It is gross.

My toenail next to the big toe came off today with a new nail under it! No fungus or injury. A tiny piece of the old nail is still attached in a corner. Should I name it? Why can't my butt fall off!!

Most likely when you were in the womb you had a twin but you ate her, and that's her toenail.
