They only give one at BK. As a concession to the red hook neighborhood which was up in arms about the private school opening in a low income area. There are no scholarships or aid because profit is the goal.

Worst case scenario, they won't open if numbers are too low. I think 150 is the minimum target they've set. At first the word was the admission team was fired. They did, however, leave voluntarily. It's highly possible that they were pressured to resign or left assuming they would have been fired anyway.

Some students get denied, especially if there are serious concerns about academic ability. There is still a lot of pressure for the school to perform, so we do want students who can be successful. Often, however, lower performing students are accepted into a lower grade, or immediately put on student support. If they don't turn around after the first year they are pressured to leave.

The ideal is to have admissions be selective, but in reality profit is driving admissions right now. The hope is to get increasingly selective as admissions increase. There is a lot of pressure to meet target numbers, so for the first year the BASIS Independent schools will pretty much take anyone. Some of those students will drop out midyear, but since there is a no refund policy, the midyear attrition doesn't hurt profit. Some students stick it out and leave at the end of the year. At BISV this year, student attrition wasn't all that bad. Most of the kids stayed for a second year.
