PP, that is exactly what you are doing...ignoring reality. Shiny well-equipped science labs, theaters, gymnasiums, etc...do.not.create better students. Look at Poland, Finland, Korea...

NP here. I don't know the science lab woman but I have to call BS on your statement. I mean, it's true, but it doesn't mean anything and it doesn't actually respond. You may not understand the difference between necessary and sufficient condition. The fact that schools can succeed without bells and whistles doesn't mean that bells and whistles have no value. And no one says they create smart kids, but to discount that the bells and whistles may enhance their learning and help in development of higher learning is to ignore reality.

Only in America do we obsess over bells and whistles in our kids' schools. Please read "The Smartest Kids in the World" by Amanda Ripley. Bells and whistles do not create smart kids.

I think there is only one troll that is obsessed that 5th and 6th graders have science labs. S/he rears his/her head every middle school thread. Quite sad.

I don't think you need all that stuff in middle school. A good orchestra might be nice

I don't understand the ragging on schools that don't have it all. Why not celebrate what they do have and what these schools do and can offer? You do know that everyone can't afford nor can they fit into Deal?

What do you consider extra curricular? My kid does photography, chess, capoeta, and girls on the run. I hear the IFA is getting more instruments for the music rooms? I went to a fantastic middle school in CA, can't remember ever stepping foot in a lab, we had lab in our classrooms, did dissections right in class.

We rent IB for Deal, and my basic attitude for ms at this point (it's still another year off) is "anything but Deal." I know a large school has lots of opportunities, but it just seems like it would overwhelm my kid.
