American Girl might actually be a great choice! It's not about the dolls but real life and crafts. My daughter had a subscription to it until she was 13 and loved getting it in the mail. She was definitely not less mature than girls her age. I just got an old issue that we had laying around. The topics in the magazine are:

Advice about secrets - to tell or not to tell
Fun personality quizzes
A poll on hair
Dying Easter eggs
An article about a family with quintuplets
A fiction story about two girls who dream up having a cooking show - will it spoil their friendship

The only thing about the dolls in it are an ad on the inside front and back covers. It's really a nice magazine for girls! I think it's perfect for a 5th-6th grader. YMMV

I think Teen Vogue is really good - it's not as focused on relationships and made-up girl drama as Seventeen is. They sometimes tackle controversial topics (still within the realm of teen preoccupations so nothing crazy) but it's usually done in a mature, non sensationalist way that's very appropriate for their target readership. Overall I feel it's more tasteful and less "in your face" than most other teen magazines.

Nylon might be a bit old for a 10-year-old but eventually this would be a good option as well - very tasteful and mostly focused on fashion and (good) music rather than teen lifestyle stuff.

That article sounds OK to me. Girls in 6th grade are talking about boyfriends already. This article doesn't mention sex or anything of that nature, but asserts that your boy friend should tell people you are dating (be proud of you) pay attention to you, call you by your right name, be interested in meeting your friends and family, and do stuff with you like go out on dates. Positive messages.

Yeah, if you read it, it's very simple. They're just using "player" to describe a guy who isn't nice to you.
