Original person who suggested GW meets. If you really wan to see something inspiring, go to the last meet of the year - it's senior day and they do a slide show for the seniors and their parents are there. At GW, they also give an award named for a stellar alum who died during military service (died from something else, not during combat, just fyi). It's very moving - I tear up every year at the dedication and the sacrifice shown. You can se how hard these young ladies worked their whole lives.

The Olympics will be a big target for terrorists. I would pass.

I think a trip to Brazil would be great, and I think Olympics would be an amazing experience but I think they are just a bit too young. The travel, the logistics, the security, the tickets, I think it's all a lot of hassle, time, and money for kids who may not be interested in watching these long events (not the edited for TV version). I would wait till they are a bit older. There will be plenty of other opportunities, including, surely, another one held in the US one of these days...

Rio is dangerous and if your kids have any inclination to get overwhelmed this will be a terrible vacation.

Eww, no. It is disgusting there. Once was enough for me. I would never bring kids there, even in an Olympic village.

It really depends on a lot of factors:
1. How well do they travel long distance?
2. How do they handle crowds and loud noises?
3. What do you hope they will retain from this trip?

We took our 6yo to London this past summer. He enjoyed it and it was worth our time and money.
