OP here: My surname is a feminine name and I don't want to use it when naming a boy. I don't even have a middle name myself!!
I'd like honor my grandmother named Gertrude. I don't think it's going to work with Phillip though.

Philip Gerard!
Gerard has some of the same origins as Gertrude:

I liked the suggestion of Garrett, too, but I think Gerard works better with Philip because the stress is on the second syllable.

I like Gerald better than Gerard and it shares the same root as well with Gertrude: http://www.behindthename.com/name/gerald

Phillip is a great choice. I had a good friend from h.s. with that name too. But I like that you're honoring your family and it's history.

I love the name Philip. Great classic name that's not overused.

I like Philip True, or use a G name like Philip Gregory or Philip Grant, or Philip Gabriel. Honoring people is important to me so I would try and work in your grandmother's name.

I think Philip Gabriel is my favorite.

How about Garret means the same thing as Gertrude.

or a " G" name like Grant

Gertrude means strength or spear you could play on that and go with an attribute like strong. Philip Strong Last name.

I like these suggestions.

to me that would make you look ignorant or like you were trying to be cutesy with True, also Tru is a bit feminine.

I love Philip especially after his uncle. What about your dad's name or grandfather's name? I really like Philip Garrett or Grant or maybe Gabriel to honor Gertrude. Lots of great options, you can't go wrong.

Or if grandma Gertrude went by Trudy, Philip Truman sounds nice.

Hey OP,

Were you fans of the cartoon, Futurama? You could name him Phillip Jay after Phillip Jay Frye! I think he just used his initial but Jay goes well with Phillip, IMHO.

Congratulations!

I like Phillip. I think Phillip Andrew first. Garrett or Grant are also nice. I think anything British would sound good.

Kai is also related to Gerard (Philip Kai?) but less obviously connected to Gertrude.

I liked the suggestion of Garrett, too, but I think Gerard works better with Philip because the stress is on the second syllable.

Philip is my dads name so I think it's a great, classic name & in your case also has special significance. I was also going to suggest your maiden name as a middle. How feminine could it be?! It drives me nuts when people just pick random names w/o special meaning (all our kids' first & middle names are family names and/or have significance). For the record, I can't stand Michael, so I wouldn't go with that.
