I went to Reed and have several friends who attended Swarthmore. We compared notes and things seemed pretty similar: small, academically oriented, intellectual, very liberal, large percentage of students who go on to get PhDs, little grade inflation, and a lot of traditions and camaraderie that occurs from being in an intense little environment that attracts that sort of student.
I think for the right student it can be a great environment, but it's not for everyone.
