We do bags. Word must get around because every year the number of kids coming to our home has doubled. We live far out from the city, almost rural.
I liked getting quarters, full size anything and Halloween pencils. My MIL used to get mobbed for her popcorn balls. Kind of weird seeing store bought ones. I have to say I think my MIL made THE best popcorn balls. They tasted like cracker jacks only fresher and big softball sized. My husband would call her up and tell her to set aside 4 for him.
I miss those days.
Thinking about last year and how many bags we gave out and the cost of candy, I could very well give a dollar this year to every kid and come out about even. 45 bags last year, candy cost $47.
We don't have to buy that much candy but what's the point being stingy ? All the kids say WOW, they have bags ! It's so cute.
