I am really impressed with the way you handled yourself while this was happening. A lot of people would have lost their composure, either getting angry or crying. I'm impressed you had the presence of mind to warn him that you might have to leave the room if his posture toward you didn't change.
I definitely would think about sharing this incident with HR, if only because it was completely unnecessary for him to be so menacing, and they will want to know/be prepared if he acts this way toward anyone else. I think you can take the high road and say that you don't need them to intervene, but you just wanted to report that this person was behaving in a way that you found uncharacteristically erratic and you were concerned.

My impression is that in his mind, he had unfinished business with you - he didn't like you. Sorry, I dont mean to make you feel bad. He might be a nasty jerk and you might be sweet as pie, but it is what it is.

So, you steer clear of him completely, smile and be so so so nice when you see him, just yes whatever he says. For goodness sake, don't talk back!!!!!!! Just keep your job till he is G O N E!! Then, youre straight.

It's not exactly "illegal" to record someone without telling them (i.e. Maryland), you just can't use it against them in court.

When in doubt, ALWAYS record. Any serious conversation like this with HR or your boss should always be recorded. Buy one, run a shoestring through it, and wear it under your shirt or blouse. Wear something bulky, if necessary.

Be careful. Even though he sounds like a loose cannon - he also sounds like he has connections and is pretty high up. Depending on your industry, he could kill your reputation in places far beyond your current org.

No. It's not. It's legal as long as one of you knows it's being taped. It would be illegal to bug his office.
