My Ex wife, while standing in the fourier and screaming I don't want your son and I don't want this ring, threw the engagement ring at my mother who had been invited to our house to babysit while I was out of town on business because my Ex had just had surgery. I cut the trip short, flew back and drove my mom home. That's when I moved out. I think my mom has the engagement ring. I'm not sure.

I'm not a child of divorce, but I don't think it's so odd. Look at it this way: if they hadn't fallen in love, and been together, the child never would have existed. Essentially, them giving her the rings instead of selling them or whatever says "even though our relationship didn't work out, it was worth it/we don't regret it because you resulted from it."

I have a near-perfect diamond solitaire sitting in a drawer (insured with a rider). I think I will have it made into a pendant in the next few years.

While I will feel a tad odd about wearing it in that way -- hey, a failed marriage necklace! -- I would never be so stupid as to enrich a pawn shop with thousands of dollars by accepting pennies on the dollar for the diamond. Why not just throw 20 dollar bills off the American Legion Bridge every afternoon?

I sold mine, after doing an exhaustive amount of legwork trying to get a decent amount of money for them. I got $750 for something he paid $3500 for (he fell for a fancy name at fancy store and ended up paying too much for a lower quality stone). He should never have spent that much, we were totally broke at the time and we spent years paying it off. I was appalled at how little value it retained but I needed the money, so I never thought twice about it.

A few years later when my now-husband and I got engaged, I begged him not to spend that kind of money on a ring. Instead, we hit the pawnshop and found something beautiful that I am happy to wear, with the comfort of knowing it was an affordable purchase for us to make.

I sold mine, barely got anything for it though. It wasn't a very expensive ring anyway when bought new.

If it had been a family heirloom, I would have given it back, no matter how long we had been married.

If we had broken up before the wedding or shortly after, I would have just given it back.
