My 4th grader hasn't mentioned anything about bras -- doesn't seem to be a thing in her class yet. I'll buy her one if she wants, though she doesn't "need" it.

But many girls (in our school most girls) are not developing at the age of 8 or 9. So, there is no need for this extra coverage. It has nothing to do with age, and everything to do with development.
Exactly. My 12 yr old is flat as a board. If she wants a sports bra for fitting-in reasons I'd get her one. But her body doesn't need one yet at all.
