We had our child evaluated at Stixrud and insurance paid for all but about $800 of it.

I'm the one whose insurance paid for the WISC (amoung other things.) It was part of a comprehensive diagnostic to address excessive tantrums/rigidity in a 5 yo.

In the end, nothing was "wrong" with her except high IQ. They worked with us to develop tools to help with the tantrums and transitions.

wow, I guess we were lucky. In another state, the school paid for the wisc testing for our first grade child (to test for giftedness)

but all that aside, I agree with the PPs who suggest downplaying the HGC. (and I have one who did get in.) I didn't talk about it much in advance with our child. I made sure he had a good night's sleep and a good breakfast before the test. I did find a few (under 5) sample questions online of the type used in the test supposedly used (like the CoGat). So while he didn't do other "prep" i felt like it might be good for him to see the format of the questions asked.

While waiting for results after the test, I hardly mentioned it at all. Just talked about how things would be good either way, and that there is a good amount of luck involved, and there are many more smart kids in the county than can get into the center.
