Maybe I am just naive or something, but if I saw that T-shirt, I would take it to mean that the wearer of the shirt is “owned” by coffee (caffeine).

I didn't see the t-shirt and I didn't know there was a coffee mug on it. He made it seem like he bought me a coffee mug AND a t-shirt which said "I own you"
I hope you can see by now that your reaction was more about you, and maybe hormones being out of wack, than about anything your DH did. It's a little unreasonable to get so upset about a t-shirt (and coffee mug, if that was your understanding) sight unseen.
