Surprised no one has mentioned the extreme head tilt to the side. I have an acquaintance who in EVERY picture has the hands on hips with her head tilted so far to one side that it looks like her neck is broken.

The cross your legs things was originally done to hid shapeless or unsightly legs.

The hands on the hips before the toddler or dog stance is called Akimbo--an African battle stance.

The hands on the hips while posing for the paparazzi is used to slenderize the arms, elongate the torso.

None of these stances are new.
