Subject: 5th grade international trip worth all the effort?
I would not think this was a good use of money, even in a school that had a ton of money.

It's a middle class privilege that should be extended to all students, as much as possible. My children take international travel for granted, it's part of how we function as a family. It's one of the things that differentiates them from their classmates, this world travel. It certainly differentiates them from their grandparents' life experiences as the generation that moved beyond the working class.
What's your hesitation? It seems life-altering, so positive!
If your children take international travel for granted, YOU ARE NOT MIDDLE CLASS! No one making less than $150,000 with kids in this area is traveling the world enough to take it for granted.
+1. For real, OP. I'm guessing you have family abroad, so all that you are paying for are the plane tickets. Even then, that can be expensive, unless you're just going to Mexico or Canada.

OP again. Would love to know how Stokes does it--they have a pretty high % of FARMs, right? Do all the kids go and how do they raise the money?

Stokes has done this with 6th graders for years. This year they did it with 5th graders. It was a success. Kids in Spanish program went to Panama and the ones in French went to Martinique.
