While I agree that things that are mementos or have personal significance are ideal, PP can still be discriminating even while looking at those stores. If she finds a pretty piece of pottery that reminds her of a trip or even is just beautiful to her then it will have meaning. Most people's art is something they just respond to visually and think is beautiful. Things for the bookshelves can be the same, especially when she can add in her child's artwork, etc. I agree with the idea of not filling the shelves with just generic stuff, but I understand OP's desire/need to have something to look at there.
