I've owned both. The BMW is better looking and more fun to drive. The Infiniti is much more reliable and considerably less expensive to maintain.
I chose an Infiniti after DH and I have had years bad experiences with a Mercedes, an Audi and a BMW. And frankly, it's not just the cost of maintenance and repairs, it's the hassle of constantly having to go to the dealership. It's also the worry about if my newish, expensive car is going to stall out on me in the middle of Wisconsin Ave. during rush hour or the AC goes out of my year-old car in the middle of August. We were constantly dealing with crap like that with all of our European cars (and we didn't own any of them for more than 7 years so none should have had the problems they did). No, my Infiniti isn't as good looking or exciting, but it's had ZERO issues and that counts for a lot. And to the obnoxious PP- I can afford any car I want. I want something easy at this point in my life. Judge away.

PP here. To me, they look dated pretty quickly, but of course that's a personal thing. I went into car buying firmly intent on buying a used entry level "luxury" car, but felt that most of the Infinitis just did not age well compared to BMW and Audis. I looked at ten year old BMWs and was flabbergasted at how modern and fresh they looked.
That was on the outside of course. After I researched the cars and reliability, I wouldn't touch a ten year old BMW with a ten foot pole. I really enjoy my BMW 3 series and its fun to drive, but I wouldn't own one past the initial four year warranty period. The starter had to be replaced three weeks into ownership, with only 300 miles on the odometer. No it didn't cost me anything, but it was a pain and a disappointment to have to have your brand new car in for maintenance for a week.
We had two BMWs in a row that were constantly in for repairs, I will never touch that brand again.

CR (and I agree) also finds Infinti to be better built cars than BMW. I personally hate German luxury cars and prefer Lexus and Infinti. But clearly, tastes are subjective.
If you buy cars like you buy a washing machine, by all means, go and read consumer reports about car rankings. This is the same company that first rated Tesla as the best car they've ever reviewed, and then took that away when the door handle failed to pop-out. This level of flip-flopping and knee-jerk reaction reveals an organization no longer focused on doing what they do best and are instead chasing after sensationalized news.
JD Powers places Infiniti one slot above BMW in dependability, but it would be a stretch to say you would see any significant difference between the two brands for reliability.
BMW 3 series cost more than the G37/Q50, this is not news. When you have an inferior product, you have to sell it for less. You can make the same point regarding Kia/Hyundai vs Honda. I love the Q70, which is the same as the older name M37. But yeah, you don't see a lot of them on the road for some reason (which is another reason I like it).

I'm looking at a 2012 or 2013 mid size luxury sport sedan, and Infiniti M37 is my likely choice. I love Nissan engines, CR loves the reliability, and I like the fact they are not so common. But it's not the price. The E class seems more affordable.
