Not doubting what you say OP .........
I have a name and an address that could be thought of as vaguely African-American, even though I'm white.
I have felt very strongly that it's what got me in the door for an interview at a very liberal organization that I ended up working for for many years. (no, not the head of the NAACP chapter in Washington state!)
But I bet they had quite a shock when I showed up for the interview.
