No, it isn't the amount of dirt as much as the fact that it traps anything that is in the environment and there is no way to clean it. God forbid those with pets and small kids. Those with carpet in the bathroom are just nasty.

Some dirt and germs that aren't really even visible at least on my carpet are not going to kill or harm you at all. Whatever. Maybe this is why kids have so many allergies these days? Carpet builds character

Well, zero allergies in my house, and we love hardwoods and hate dirty, gross carpet.

On that note, the snob factor of hardwoods always annoys me. I prefer carpet but wouldn't say I HATE hardwoods. Hardwood people on the other hand seem to be a bit self-righteous and almost classist about it. Showed a friend of mine pictures of my new house and she was like, "It looks nice... But there's carpet. My parents raised me to be a hardwood snob." Um, okay. Whatever your preference, who really cares that much. Maybe it's more dirty or whatever but it's not a mud hut.

I haven't had cable in years, and even when I did, I watched zero shows on hgtv, but I prefer hardwoods. I like the way it looks and it's easier to keep clean. I'd also be ok with really nice tile floors, but I do really love the look of hardwoods. It has nothing to do with what anyone else likes.

Why I don't like carpet: if there is a spill, it's harder to clean. Much harder. If it doesn't get cleaned properly, it will smell and/or you will have to see the stained carpet. If you get it wet, it's hard to get it dry, but not with hardwood floors. There are many other reasons, but not because I'm a sheep. How odd to think that.

My house is all hardwood, and if I owned it, I would totally replace the stairs and bedrooms with carpet. The stairs especially - they are so LOUD and I fell down them in socks carrying my newborn baby, and he has slipped down them as well. Also, I ended up buying tons of rugs to cover the hardwood, so it sort of seemed silly. I think this is a trend and we'll go back to carpet at some point.

I love staying at my in-laws' plushly carpeted guest room. But their house is so clean and lightly lived in. They live alone in a big house and have a cleaner. With two kids, a cat, and a husband who refuses to remove his shoes in the house, wall to wall carpet would not be cleaned often enough in my house. Wall to wall carpet is a luxury that should be reserved for the childless, petless, and wealthy. Or at least for those who don't work full time and clean their own house.

I have + still do prefer a carpeted look and feel to my home. Like you, it just makes a home feel so cozy and homey to me.

I think most people love the hardwood floors these days since they are much easier to keep up and the maintenance is so much better. People these days are just busier and no one likes to stress about getting the carpets dirty, etc.

+1. When we bought our house, the carpet upstairs was the first thing that had to go. Carpets get filthy and are gross. They also make the house feel cheap and outdated. So for resale value, I'd definitely stick with hardwood.

Although I like walking on carpet, I have hardwood floors throughout my house as I have cats. Their cat hair/cat litter gets everywhere and hardwood floors are way easier to clean.

OP do you have pets? In the one room of our house with carpet I've found it impossible to remove the lingering smell of dog even with steam cleaners and baking soda treatments, etc. The dog hair must just get ground deeply down between the fibers.

^^ to be clear, maybe the hyper-clean hardwood homes are producing the weak, allergic kids
