My DH was a teen drinker and had a drinking and drug problem and ended up in rehab at age 19 after being kicked out of his first college.
He told me his mother was willing to accept all kinds of excuses from him.
"I was just holding it for a friend."
"I found it."
"I have no idea how it got there."
"Honestly, it's not mine. I don't do drugs or alcohol."
Convoluted tales he would make up, such as the recycling story.
OP, honestly, do you believe that a 16 year old teenage boy is making art of recyclables? C'mon. If you do, give his parents a call and find out. Because I have a hard time believing in such a project, and if it is going on, that his parents allow him to go through the trash and take liquor bottles home for his project. WOULD YOU?????
OP, wise up.
Does he have a friend who makes art from recyclables? It should be pretty easy to determine.

Applejack is a brandy. It's 80 Proof, 40% alcohol. If he drank the bottle, he'd have alcohol poisoning. If he drank half the bottle, he'd have trouble staying upright. It also has a very strong smell. He didn't drink it.
Apart from the fact that it would be odd to leave it on the counter. Just talk to him, reiterate why you were concerned, and believe him. I have a teen boy who doesn't drink. And no, I'm not just being naïve. Not all teens drink.

They were so stoned they almost couldn't breath.
