I was terrified and in the end didn't feel a thing and they had to tell me it was over (I was gripping the table waiting for it to start) - all of my girlfriends but one that had it done at either SG or Domion all said they had no pain (the one who said she had "some" pain had a blocked tube). I believe the difference for some is the use of a soft catheter that they just softly put into your cervix vs the old balloon catheter that they threaded into your cervix/uterus and then inflated a balloon to hold it in place. regardless, it is done in a matter of minutes - the actual dye part is maybe 10 seconds.

It was a piece of cake for me. It is interesting how people's experiences are vastly different. I wonder what to attribute that to...?

I would agree. I had mine done yesterday. It was awful. Cried through the whole thing. They asked if I even wanted to stop because I was in so much pain...I had good results though so at least it's over and hopefully never need to do it again.

I had some cramping when the needle and was inserted, and then really bad cramps when the dye was injected, but it was all over very quickly.

And then I got pregnant the next month!

I had it done at SG and I felt some pressure on the left side that was pretty uncomfortable for a few seconds. But that was all the pain I felt. A few days after I felt some frequency in urinating but that went away on its own.

i just got my HSG test at SG done this morning (2nd one in 3 years). was not painful and much more smooth compared to the previous one which was done at a hospital (radiology lab). i did take viocodin, though.

Agree with PP who said Not to go to Georgetown--they could not even get the catheter in my cervix the first time--all bad. Hurt like heck time two. Go to your RE if they offer it. Dr. Sacks is great-best RE in town, IMHO. SO Great.

I was very very scared, and there was really no need for me to be... it was very brief and not as bad as I had imagined. I took a couple Advil beforehand, which might have reduced the slightly crampy feeling.

I didn't even feel mine. It was over very quickly. Take your Dh with you for reassurance.

Mine didn't hurt at all! It was over before I knew it. Dh was with me almost the entire time, and I requested a female doctor, which put my mind at ease. But honestly, very quick and very painless.

agree with the pp. my RE said it's better to get it done with her (or some other RE) rather than a radiology lab. she said that most labs use a tenaculum to hold the cervix, but REs tend not do that. that makes the test less uncomfortable.

From what I've heard, the REs are better at it than the techs. The tech couldn't get in for my first -- said I was too narrow. Then they gave me cytotek to open the cervix opening, and that helped. and, i've since had REs do IUIs and they have no problem getting in, so I suspect that the techs just don't have as good equipment or experience.

When he did get in, it was a pinch that lasted about 45 seconds, and felt a little strange, but not too painful. Not worse than some bad period cramps. I took 4 advil beforehand and then a few afterward. Wear a pad -- the after gush was a bit messy (sorry if that is TMI).

Ask your doctor to prescribe you one valium.. believe me it helped.
