It is a subjective question, but it is being asked with the same wording across all schools...so the different proportions (for that most extreme
response option) likely reflects real variations in use.

"Huge drug scene" is rather subjective, no? At BYU someone smuggling in a case of Diet Coke might be considered a huge drug scene. For kids who've been popping addies since middle school, pot is nothing and occasional use of cocaine isn't going to be seen as a huge drug scene.

Rampant? This article doesn't suggest that. I was at UMPC when Len Bias died. There was a small group of kids and certain circles doing coke. I never saw it. Seems like this is still the case, and I am willing to bet at many other campuses, not just Penn

I'm a old mid-30s fart, but I knew of plenty of drug use among my peer group (students of Ivies, Little Ivies, small party schools, art schools...). Cocaine wasn't the most popular drug because people found it easier to get their hands on Adderall and its counterparts. One of the biggest cokeheads I ever knew went on from being his Dartmouth frat's dealer to a product engineer for the iPhone circa 2007.
