I want to add that my dog got sick at the dog beach in Pasadena. Pheumonia. Polluted water.

Here are some good reviews of Matapeake Beach and some other suggestions for doggie swimming on Yelp-

Check out the VA arboretum, out 66.

400 Blandy Farm Lane, Boyce VA 22620

It is 100's of acres of fields, trails, and creeks. The whole thing is LEGAL off leash space. It is also open to horses, and families (so there are some cars driving through, just to be aware). It is a trek from DC (usually around 90 minutes), but well worth it!

I have never seen dog poop on the sand, they have poop bags at every beach entrance, and trash cans. There is a leash law hut it is not really enforced especially off season. Been going there for years and always let my dogs off, 90% of the dogs are off leash off season.

O course you have never seen dog poop on the sand! The lazy owners try to cover it, as you will find out when you put your new beach towel down.
