According to Haaretz, the documentary chronicled 35 Ethiopian women who immigrated to Israel eight years ago and said they were told they would not be allowed to move to Israel unless they agreed to the Depo-Provera shots.
“We said we won’t have the shot,” recounted one of the women, according to Haaretz. “They told us, if you don’t you won’t go to Israel. And also you won’t be allowed into (an assistance program), you won’t get aid or medical care. We were afraid … We didn’t have a choice. Without them and their aid we couldn’t leave (Ethiopia). So we accepted the injection. It was only with their permission that we were allowed to leave.”
Yes, the basic anti-Semitism that fueled limited quotas for Jews in work and higher education and encouraged residential segregation was alive and well at the time. Those Jews would have been a burden on the anti-Semites (many people at the time) who couldn't bear to have to live side by side with someone who didn't share their Christian identity and culture. Very inconvenient.Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Wait, so Israel should open its borders to thousands and thousands of Africans just because they show up?
Should Europe? Should we? Will you absorb thousands of immigrants into your neighborhood?
Israel -- actually any nation -- is under zero obligation to take in immigrants that show up illegally.
It's pretty nice of them to offer a ticket and cash.
Using your logic, no one was under any obligation to help the Jews (gypsies, disabled, etc) fleeing the Holocaust.
That is correct. It was entirely up to the discretion of the United States. Many factors were probably taken into account, not in the least was the ability for the European Jews to assimilate easily and readily into American society and not be a burden.
The problems in Eritrea (and Ethiopia and Somalia and Syria) can not be solved by absorbing their entire populations into other countries. While kind-hearted, this is ridiculously short-sighted.
And not Jewish. But then they do let black Jews into the country, they just give them injections of birth control without their knowledge!Anonymous wrote:But they are black and poor....not like the French!
Agree. It was terrible how we and other nations treated Jews desperate to get out of Europe.jsteele wrote:Agreed that this is terrible, but the US sort of did do that to Jews fleeing Hitler:

You can offer shelter to a refugee. What's stopping you?

Not up to the discretion of the Palestinians, of course. The people who, you know, already lived there.
I believe that we are responsible for each other's well-being. By living on this planet, we are beholden to one another. No one is obligated to help victims of human trafficking, or of natural disasters, or of famine, and yet we do. I think the same level of compassion should be applied to people seeking to escape oppressive and war-torn environments.
How many illegals have you personally taken in?
Nice straw man.
I am not a nation.

Oooh, goodie, you're so right, these Africans should be so grateful for a one-way ticket back to the place they were risking their lives to escape. On a very basic level, whatever happened to "paying it forward"?
Are you a grown up or are you in high school? No wait, make that college and your majoring in what, Women's Studies? Oppressive White People?
Do you have one of those "Everything I learned in Kindergarten" posters on your wall?
Yes. They should be grateful.
Israel *owes* them nothing.
