Op here. Thanks so much for sharing. It gives me hope. It takes more than love to have a happy ever after, so for those who are living that, I would like to get some good advice. Thanks! And please keep sharing! It makes my day when I read these great story (gives me a break from the affairs stories on this board, and makes me see there are people out there who value faithfulness).

Really OP? the only ones worth hearing are the ones who made it over 40 years married. The divorce rate is WAYYYYYYYY too high in the US to consider others.

I had been dealing with an illness for most of my 30's that kept me from dating. He had been in a meh-relationship that led to marriage and soon after divorce.

We are both in our late 30's and figure that we'd be single forever. Expectations were low; both of us looking for a serial monogamy kind of life.

Met through on-line dating. I was smitten immediately. He thought I was cute, but after his divorce, was cautious. Took him 8 months (and one break-up/get back together) to realize he was in love with me.

Less than 2 years after we started dating and at 40, we got married. The girl who had given up all hope of finding Mr. Perfect-for-me. We've been married 5 years, have had some horrible things happen to us and yet we fall in love more and more every day. I've never felt more adored or valued in my entire life. The key, I've found, to keeping the love alive is respect and teamwork.

I have a wonderful, loving marriage with a fabulous DH, but the love story that I really want to tell is about my grandparents.

He was a rough-around-the-edges outdoorsman. He was missing two fingers and smoked cigars. She was a petite, sweet woman who could beat any man in a rifle marksman contest, then go home and bake up the sweetest chocolate chip cookies you've ever had. Never used a recipe for anything, she taught me to cook using a pinch of this and a scoop of that. Oh, and she was a serious card shark.

They doted on each other. Well into their 80s, they teased, flirted, and pinched each other on the butt. He bragged all over town about his beautiful, sweet, strong-minded lady. She did anything for him.

I watched them in years of alternating bad health - he was sick for a while, then recovered, and she became ill. Each one cared for the other with an intensity I've never seen elsewhere. The look in his eyes when she walked into a room... It'd light up your day.

They are both deceased now. But every time I think about what kind of marriage I want, I think of those two.
