I would find my IB less horrible if they sepearated the high achieving students into their own classroom by 2nd grade. I have a feeling there would be a LOT more interest from the high SES families for the IB if the schools did that. DCPS is determined to screw us over. I wil let a lot slide in ps/pk and K. But by second or third grade, no I don't want my kid stuck in a classroom where the majority of the class is still on the K level. So we will bail. and to the asshole who think we shoudl just make more money. Thank for the reminder that our 265k annual salary is stil not enough for us to "buy" our public education at an acceptable level. You are an ass.

I really have to agree with 2nd PP. That HHI can get you a safe roof over your head in ANY zip code in the greater Washington area. Some will have better schools than other zip codes. Some will have better commutes. Some of the homes that you can secure in a safe neighborhood with solid schools won't have as much square footage as 1st PP might like.

That's your problem, 1st PP. Your bitter sneering hostility to those that 1. have more than you or 2. made different choices than you did is kind of gross. And funny. And there are a lot of you on DCUM lately, panicking because your gamble isn't paying off on all fronts.

The commute for kids who are IB for Deal is a bear to BASIS and it's also interesting to see how some "smart" kids from the "good" schools wilt when faced with real academic pressure. It's also very hard to juggle neighborhood/travel sports, etc., when you have to travel virtually to the MD border from BASIS.


Yes, if only they would build an underground train line from the Maryland border to BASIS, perhaps with a stop along the way at Deal - then maybe people would begin to commute from upper NW to downtown.


That would be amazingly awesome. I wonder if that mythical train line would be a straight shot (like on the same line) so it would be easy for kids to make that trip on their own.

I know, there should just be an income cut-off, if a family makes above $200k/year then they cannot go to a charter or use OOB, they can go to their IB school or move. That will keep the wotp families in their perfectly good schools and make eotp famoies either go all in on gentrification or move to an acceptable school.

I don't really think this, but the idea of a family with a HHI of $265k/year claiming it is more deserving of charter options than families IB for highly regarded wotp schools is RIDICULOUS.

NP. Our HHI is less than half of yours and we are IB for JKLM. It is a matter of what you prioritize in your spending. With 265 K I would be swimming in dough.

I agree with this, so why take the spot at a charter if you are in bounds for JKLM? Kids EOTP have a lot less chance of getting in if more people enter the lottery and win the spots. AND they still have to play the out of bounds lottery to get into JKLM so as one poster so inadequately pointed out someone from EOTP is most likely not going to get into Jenney OR the charter. That's why it's selfish!!!

I'm not the one you are responding to, but I would be careful if I were you. Pride is ugly especially when expressed the way you do it. It doesn't take much for anyone to go from upper middle class to dirt poor.

It's not just our impression that Janney is a good school. IT IS a good school. Just ask the people who are in in bounds for the schools in SE or NE.

They can't actually have their kids at two different schools--if they aren't in their IB school, then that's a spot someone else can take. It amuses me that people seem to think Janney is the be-all, end-all, and that those IB should be required to attend. It just doesn't work for our family right now, for a bunch of reasons, and I'm sure others feel the same way. Where there is the illusion of school "choice", as in DC, you do what is right for your child as an individual. Why should my kid be miserable because you think Janney is a good school? That's just silly. And no, we are not hogging one of your precious charter spots. We've opted for another DCPS that we think is a better fit for our child.
