I worry this sets him up to lie to you. You already know about the behavior, and he's definitely going to smoke it in college. Most pot smokers outgrow it after a while anyway. (then some of us rediscover it when we are in our 40s!)

Oh, please.

OP's child is doing drugs. At that point, it's whatever it takes to keep him alive. Because yes, he will progress to heavier drugs, he'll steal, hurt people, maybe prostitute himself to finance his addiction, and end up dead.

He can go to college later if he gets clean. He can't go to college if he's dead.

I'm the one you are responding to. I've smoked pot as a teen, and have never done any of those things that you listed. I've never even tried any other drug. Overreact much!!

Yah, but pot use tends to get you around people who use other recreational drugs so you wind up with more of an opportunity and exposure to heavier stuff. Much more so than drinking at parties does. Usually even at parties drug use is done in a more private area - they don't want to share and they don't necessarily want others to know what they're up to.

Did you see this in an anti-drug documentary somewhere. It's just not the case.

I'm pretty sure the drama-poster has had zero experience with pot or drugs.

+1. But, I'm extremely anti-pot, have never done and will never do that or any other drugs, and even I know that's ridiculous. That assertion is full of logical fallacies and has no support that I've ever seen. Ugh. Spreading fear and misinformation is never helpful and only weakens the position of those of us opposing drug use to our kids for other, legitimate reasons.

Just what I thought after I read it. No fucking clue.

Do you really want him to NOT go to college and sit around your house for the next four years - still smoking pot? Better to be a pot head with a college degree!

PS I smoked pot in high school and college and went on to get my doctorate.

Anonymous wrote:So you have a kid who did well enough in HS to get into college and you won't pay for it because he has smoked pot several times. If he "quits" then you will pay to send him off for four years to where there is more pot available than anywhere else and it's more accepted than anywhere else.

Why don't you teach him to be more discreet and not get caught and that in moderation pot is better than getting drunk?

Do you know the statistics for the % of kids that occasionally smoke pot in college?

10-1 if the Op has caught the kid doing this several times this is not just an "in moderation" habit. I am just guessing this. Maybe he really has only experimented with it.

Where is he getting the money for this? Where is he getting all of the freedom to buy/smoke it?

The kid needs to be in some sort of activities, maybe he needs a part tine job. If he's busy hopefully he will stay away from this stuff. Even an early morning job, joining a gym and lifting weights might help.

Teen years are tough. You need to convey your standards while teaching him self accountability, responsibility and independence. It's a very hard balance.

I think I would approach this from the perspective that he is at college to get an education and while you are willing to support him you expect he will get good grades and graduate in 4 years. Tell him if anything (job, parties, alcohol, a significant other, pot) get in the way then you will need to reassess the situation and possibly make some changes. Give him the opportunity to make responsible choices.

I'd also remind him that each semester is only 16 weeks so assuming he goes 2 semesters a year he still has 20 weeks of free time to use as he pleases.

Anonymous wrote:Would you do the same thing with alcohol? I am not trying to minimize your concerns. I think my approach would be: I can't control you, but I will not subsidize it. I would put a GPA requirement on to ensure he is high functioning -- something like 3.4 depending on the school....

Oh, and make sure the child understands the impact it can have on career prospects..

I agree with this. While I'm not going to condone pot smoking, I'm not naïve enough to think they're not going to smoke pot and drink in college.
