This thread makes me laugh. There's going to be a cohort of little kids who will use only white and gray if they're ever asked to draw a kitchen. I don't remember such a dominating trend - ever. And I'm pretty old.

Fwiw I have builder grade 1990 oak cabinets. I am saving us for a full gut remodel of our bathrooms but for now I painted the vanities. 2-3 coats of Kilz primer followed by paint did the trick.

OP, there are painters who are well versed in cabinet painting - they can "treat" the oak by using the appropriate base filler, primer, and quality paint. You'll want to find a painter who takes these steps and utilizes a high quality sprayer to do the painting to give you that nice professional look.
