My son is in it. Fantastic. And they are committed to working with local industry to help your kid get a job. Hope it remains a sleeper school!!
No worries about that. It's been sleeping since day one and will remain unknown outside of the Fairfax area.
International students largely pay full freight and are therefore welcomed by most colleges in this country. Plus, schools look forward to donations from the kids' rich parents. The out of state students -- their state school systems must be pretty weak. Part of the problem with GMU -- which, to be fair, has some excellent professors -- is its location. Clearly, better foresight would have resulted in it being given a better campus.

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Computer Science is huge at GMU. http://cs.gmu.edu/. Serious Game Design as well. You have to be accepted into the programs, however, because they are in such demand. Game Design applicants must submit portfolios. The departments meet monthly with the Dulles corridor hi-tech companies to work with them to handle contracts (some students are paid to work on them) and to assess need. The average graduate in computer science makes more than the average UVA and William and Mary graduate (per President Cabrera). The internaitonal student body is immense, as are out-of-state students. Fourteen admissions counselors handle the international students alone. 35,000 students attend, 1/3 of which are Doct. or Masters' candidates. 12,750 live on campus and the construction there never ends. Please go visit and read up on what's in your own backyard. It's an astonishing institution that the state legislature has pumped millions into. Facilities are new and state-of-the art. The engineering schools are also well regarded. And Mason just opened its North Korean campus last year.
I hope you mean south korea

The only exception might be if you don't have money for room and board and need to live at home. GMU is a fine school but choosing GMU over UVA for computer science doesn't make sense if the goal is to the most highly ranked school. There is no subject at GMU that ranks higher than UVA. Period.
This is the strangest thread ever.....
I know a kid who chose VT over MIT two years ago... that was the strangest.

Just stop. U. Va. is on probation in the hearts and minds of humankind with all the crap that's happened there over the past year. A double dose of hubris won't help matters at all. Period.
PP here. If students are turning down UVA based on the recent incidents I doubt the next school on the list is GMU. There are A LOT of other instate schools that rank ahead of GMU. I have nothing against GMU and chances are my DS will probably go there but people aren't turning down UVA to go to GMU.
Did it ever cross your mind that some choose quality education and job prospects over the "prestige" of a name?
Is rather my child be sitting in an office with a six figure salary immediately after graduation than job-hunting with his nose in the air.
