I wish that both sets lived a distance away that did not require 5+ day visits at a time. I struggle having houseguests for a week at a time, but my parents are on the west coast and his are in the midwest, so a long weekend isn't doable.

I thank God my parents were in town. We moved for work but will return this summer.

It all depends on your relationship with them. Most of the time we have to work on that, which sets a good example for the children.

My in-laws live about 45 minutes away. They are not always friendly yet are pretty demanding of our time. Sometimes I wish they lived further so that we would see them less. But then I am pretty sure they'd be trying to guilt us onto a plane once a month or something ridiculous. And then they'd have to stay with us overnight! Yikes. That's something that's never happened and I'm glad for it. Now that we have a kid I could see them maybe spending the night on Xmas eve or something, but other than that I am really happy I don't have to spend 2 or 3 straight days with them in my home. They can come for a Saturday afternoon for a few hours and then go home and I can have a big glass of wine....

My own mother lives 15 minutes away and I'd prefer she lived next door. Or maybe 5 minutes away .

There is literally no answer to this that isn't 100% person specific. If my MIL and own parents lived locally I would be over the moon. They are helpful, loving and respectful. If some crazy person happened to be my mother I am sure it would be easier to not deal with her all the time.

Depends.

Warm, loving, helpful = best to be close by.

Distant, bitter, nasty, antagonistic, selfish = best to be LOOOOOOONG distance.

I'm happy with the distance to my parents (could be a little closer). Ils, meh, if they were farther away they would stay with us or we would be expected to stay with them. So this is OK.

+100!
