I can't afford the childcare or camps for my own kids so we stay home. I volunteer at VBS camps and a scout camp for a total of 4 weeks. I spend 1 week on a service trip with church. We visit family for a bit and then I try to pick up some work tutoring or take a summer course.

My current school (and last school) have a camp program in summer---I work a few weeks for that for the extra $. Travel internationally- since adopting my baby 16 months ago, I have done domestic trips only, but hoping to go international with her not this summer, but the following one. Long weekends to my hometown of CT.

I take classes/lessons on things I was interested in (personal hobbies), do a couple weeks of professional development stuff, and a few weeks of travel (mostly visiting family that I couldn't see the rest of the year).

Mostly, summer for me is recuperating from working 60+ hour weeks for the entire school year. Without the down time, I would burn out.

I visit family (across country) for a couple weeks.

I do additional trainings/curriculum projects. If available I'll also do ESY services and tutoring (through my school).

My best friend is a teacher. She spends the summer tutoring, working on curriculum-writing committees at the school (which she gets paid for), and taking continuing education courses.

Before I had kids I wrote curriculum, worked in the special ed office for IEPs that were written over the summer, and took classes for my master's degree. Now that I have kids, I may take a class or two during the summer.

My aunt was a teacher and she was the directot of a sleep away camp ( in charge of managing the counselors, schedulin activities, etc) Her kids got to go all summer for free and then worked at the camp as lifeguards.

I used to be a sleep away camp director, but it really wasn't sustainable. The spring is such a busy time with getting camp ready and hiring staff, it was REALLY tough to do that while teaching full time. Basically you have no weekends from late March until summer, and then in the summer you're working 24-7. I burned out after a few years.

Yep. I used to do a few weeks of camp at the school where I worked before I had kids. I also used to be a leader for People to People and would travel for several weeks during the summer.

Now that I have kids, if I did summer camp I would have to put my kids in camp and I'd end up ahead-- but only about $200 week before taxes. Not worth it. I'd rather spend the time with my kids.

I do miss the traveling but maybe someday when my kids are older I can think about it again.

Not a teacher or tutor, but... one on one education through tutors is extremely different from the education even the best teacher can provide for a child in a group setting simply because 100% of the tutoring time, energy, and attention is specific to the individual student's educational needs with lessons tailored to be optimum for the specific student.

Of course that would be compensated at a higher rate than work in a classroom setting. The teacher/tutor still has to do all the prep work to be ready for each lesson, but your child is the sole beneficiary of that work and gets more out of it than what he would if taught in a group. IMO this sort of education is quite simply worth more.

Sit at the lake house with my kids. Read books. See parks. Visit family.

And do some workshops, provided by the school district.

With as many years as I have in the system, you couldn't even afford my regular hourly pay if you're complaining about $60.

But I do work with my friend's child who is struggling - all free of course.
