Yes, send DH over, without the fish, to find out if they are home and can pick the fish up.
Why are you lugging the fish and tank back? That is their responsibility

Op even if the fish freeze they'll be fine (I'm assuming these aren't tropical fish bit ordinary goldfish.) A friend had a goldfish pond growing up and they froze over every winter and thawed out in the spring. Seriously, the fish will be fine on the doorstep.

OP here. It's a fancy-looking goldfish, I think. It did not have a name when dropped off. My kids have since named it "Goldie". They are getting attached (hahaha!). I do not have time to take care of a fish; we already have a hamster.

The amount of brain cells I have devoted to this fish probably exceeds those of the fish.

I had fish when I was a kid, and I don't think you need to clean the tank very often. Certainly not after three days.

OTOH, all our fish died, so there's that. But probably they died of old age.

Me, too!

OP, are we talking about a fancy fish or a run-of-the-mill goldfish? The cost factor should also influence your decision..
