Don't worry (this is OP). I'm glad I didn't worry too much. I really think that a 14 month old who does what you described is well on the way to walking. The general consensus seems to be that 18 months is when you might want to take some action (my ped said this also when DS2 wasn't walking at 15 mo) but as you can see by this thread there are plenty of kids who walk in the 15-16 month range without issue.

FWIW my older son walked at around 14.5 months and is now one of the sportiest kids around. So who knows if there's any rhyme or reason to it at all!

My DD started crawling at 9 months and didn't walk until 15 and a half months. My ped was not concerned at all at our 15 month appt when she still was not walking. Now at 18 months my DD is steady as a rock and fast -- practically running.

Hi, OP! So great to hear your update, thanks for resurrecting the thread. I'm the PP who had the awful 15 month appointment ("he failed his gross motor" etc.). My son started walking right at 16 months, and now at 16.5 months is getting pretty good at it. The one thing he still can't do is get to standing on his own, but usually when he falls he finds the nearest thing, pulls up, and is off again. I shot some great video of him walking at a mall play area a few weeks ago, husband and friends think I should send to the NP we saw at his 15 month check up.

Also, in case it's useful, I consulted a family friend who's a PT shortly after the 15 month appointment. She wasn't concerned at all about the not walking, and said to consider evaluation if he's 18-20 months, but otherwise, not a big deal. I also talked about it with my best friend, whose son has autism and related motor deficits. She was furious at how the NP handled it and told me to trust my instincts rather than rushing to EI.

Mine started cruising about 11 months. She was fast, so I thought walking was right around the corner. Nope, she walked at sixteen months. She now plays soccer, does ballet, and gymnastics.

Curious when your late/late-ish walkers started crawling? My almost 9 month old is showing no signs of crawling and wondering if I should be concerned and whether it means she'll be a late walker.

My kid didn't crawl until 11 months. He started walking at 14.5 months. So in my data set of one, late crawling didn't have an affect on walking--he walked within the range of normal despite very late crawling.

This kid is now 2.75 and is still not as good at gross motor things as some of his peers, but is well within normal and our ped has never expressed the slightest concern. Hope this helps!
