And no, I don't think it's being uptight because we don't want our 15 month old repeating that.

It is very annoying. Here's what I did. The one time she was over her and she kept swearing I looked at my DC and said those are adult words that you are not allowed to say. If you do, you will go into time out. I did this right in front of her. She now tries to watch her mouth in front of my kids. Since your mom is not going to stop, just parent your kids if they start repeating the words. (my mom hates seeing my kids in time out, they usually cry when they are in there)
Winner, winner! Chicken dinner!
Some families have a code word to alert kids to unacceptable language from others.
We do the same.
What's your code? How does that work?
I don't know why people are being so hard on OP. She doesn't want her child to hear words she considers offensive when they're at the age where who knows what they'll pick up. That seems fair. I never swore in front of my son until one day I said shit and guess what word my 15-month-old repeated all morning? Yep.
She mentioned cutting off contact, that is not a proportional response to something that many people would not consider swearing.

I just ignore it and tell my kids not to say it. I don't correct her and correct my kids if they correct her; I tell that it is disrespectful to correct their grandparents even if they do something that kids aren't allowed to do.
Kids have to learn boundaries and one of them is that you can't do everything everyone else does. Even Grandma.
I don't think "oh my Lord" is blasphemy.
Well I do. She says "Oh my God" and "Jesus Christ" too. all for the same exclamation kinds of things. It's annoying and I consider it inappropriate for a kid to say.
Anonymous wrote:PP here -- and for those of you who think this is tame, I actually agree. I am a very tame person. And so are my kids. And I like it that way, and intend on keeping it that way!
Anonymous wrote:I thought you meant more in line of "F***** A*****"
This is TAME.

Anonymous wrote:I realize this is something that our family is picky about, but it's something we feel strongly about. My mother has no problems with the phrases "Oh, my God" or "Jesus Christ!" and such. DH and I are uncomfortable with those and do not want DS picking them up. When I ask her to please refrain around him, well, you can guess her response. "Jesus Christ, stop being so uptight!" Any suggestions for us? Besides cutting off contact?
