I do this every time someone calls me. It's called being courteous. I HATE IT when people just stand in the middle of the room chatting away on their phone. If you're talking on the phone go somewhere else.

Also, perhaps he's speaking to her mother about something personal to her.

This is interesting. My husband does this too but I've never even thought about it until I saw this thread. It seems normal to me to not be chatting away on the phone in front of other people - more polite. Our house is small anyway so I can usually hear him and if I wanted to know what he was saying I would just ask.

Is it just when he talks to him mom or ALL phone calls? Maybe he just doesn't like feeling like you are listening in to the conversation. I always leave the room for phone calls for privacy even if there's no reason to need privacy.

Women will never understand just how much guys hate talking on the phone. When I am on the phone for a long conversation, I have to either get in the car and drive, go for a walk outside, or sort through boxes or something else in the house while talking. I cannot just sit in the house and talk. And I do not thing I am unique in this. It's a guy thing.

It's partly psychological, but also partly because people around me do not realize that something as benign as scrunching the cereal bag is too much noise!

So perhaps you really do not make a peep, but perhaps you actually do.

He doesn't want his neurotic wife commenting later about something he said to his mother.

It doesn't matter who it is, if it is someone I'll be talking to for a while, I like to talk away from people. I hate talking on the phone with someone sitting next to me or in the room. No clue why, I just don't like it.

Privacy is one. Always leaving the room is quite another. My DH has been doing this for nearly 20 years. Truly bizarre. And the frustrating part is that he often makes plans with them and then neglects to tell me until much later on.

Are people not entitled to a little privacy while married? I would find it odd if my husband wanted to tell me where and how to take phone calls. That's a bit controlling for my taste.

Maybe he is telling her something he doesn't want you to know, e.g., he wants a divorce from a nagging, impossibly jealous shrew.

I excuse myself and leave the room to take phone calls. I was taught that this is the polite thing to do rather than ignoring the person you are with. I'm actually a little surprised that anyone would have an issue with this.
