Okay snarky . I think there's a difference in getting a cup of coffee (personalized service, quality product, ambience) and getting groceries (necessity of the industrialized world, impersonal service). Have you worked in a service job before? Oh, and grocery store workers frequently are eligible for benefits and discounted groceries.

PP, there is nothing snarky about it. The barista at Starbucks just pours a cup of coffee and hands it to you. Nothing more if you just get regular coffee. And this is less than what the pizza person at Whole Foods does for you: puts a piece of pizza in the oven, takes it out, puts it in a box for you and hands it to you. But nobody tips him/her...

I used to work at Starbucks and the tips really did help as they are divided between everyone. However, our store had a lot of regulars that we were friendly with. Our shop was a bit more familial then typical Starbucks.
Everything at Starbucks is now automatic and the quality of drinks varies a bit. When I worked there we were grinding the beans for the drinks, tamping the grinds. And the service now is not always good and the drink quality can really vary.
I tip on good service especially at locally owned shops or places where I go enough to recognize the staff. I definitely tip for latte art!

I don't tip at Starbucks. I dated a barista 10ish years ago and he made a really good hourly wage plus healthcare plus bonuses. They don't need the tips.

I will, however, tip anyone who puts pretty art on my latte (I'm looking at you, Peet's!).

I do not tip at all if I am expected to stand at the counter, order, and then pick up my food. I will leave a small tip at a place like Panera because they are bringing out the food and bussing tables. But I'm not tipping the Barista at Starbucks for pouring me a cup of coffee and putting in on the counter.

Zero. I only tip waiters, not places like Starbucks.

You're welcome to get a better-paying job.

Nothing. We are not all rolling in extra money, you know. I always get a Starbucks tea at the airport before my vacation flight, to prep myself for the 8 to 13 hour in-cabin kid-wrangling. That's less than once a year. The rest of the time, I make tea at home.
