When I was in HS and college, pluses and minuses were used. I think it is fair - there is a vast difference between an 80 and an 89.4.

It bothers me that MCPS doesn't use this system.

I think the pluses and minuses balance each other out over time. Little extra for the plus little ding for the minus.

It isn't the minuses that are killing her GPA, but her test scores.

It definitely does make a difference in HS, when colleges are looking at your GPA. Not so sure about college, unless the student plans to continue their education. If going directly into the work force, I really can't imagine a potential employer asking for this information. I'm sure it happens somewhere out there, but it has to be the exception. I've been out of college for over 25 years and have had multiple jobs and not once has an employer asked me for my collge GPA. Does this really happen?? What type of companies, employers ask for this information?

DD's high school grading system included pluses and minuses but most teachers assigned the letter grade without using them. It does make a difference in the long haul.

A 3.1 could get you into medical school if you had a high enough MCAT score and you weren't looking at top programs.

Maybe true for those seeking jobs right after college, but absolutely not true for any serious graduate or professional school. So if the job you really want is the one after you finish law school, business school, medical school, or get your PhD, focus on that GPA and (if hard sciences) research. Related jobs /internships along the way are great and can help you stand out from other academically strong students, but if they kill your GPA your internship in college won't get you into grad/professional school
