You need to read up on cognitive distortions. You're overgeneralizing and jumping to conclusions that if you can't afford renovations it means you are a failure at life. Money and rental property improvements are not your whole life. Stop calling yourself a failure. Just don't give them the key next time. It sounds codependent like they are trying to rescue you. If you feel like a failure, maybe they are picking up on that, which makes them try to help more. If you don't want help, then set more boundaries and speak to them as if you don't need help.

Don't you folks understand! I have to remain "The Victim". That's my thing!

Better to laugh than cry about it. I've been made to feel the victim too, so I understand both points of view.

I get the feeling OP parents bought OP the rental property. If so, yeah, your parents are being manipulative--but the only way out is to not allow them to give you gifts.

Parents - "Oh goodness, this reno is costing us so much! But given the state of your life, we thought we had to contribute in some way... boy, is this going to dent our retirement! So, when are you going to get promoted?"

You - "Thanks for the reno. What's the weather like in your area?"

Parents - "So-so, I guess. We haven't had time to enjoy anything or go out, we were worrying so much about your reno and how much it's costing us. You're so lucky we're here to take care of you, since you haven't managed very well so far, but it's really taking a toll on us."

You - "Yes, I see that. OK bye, I have to go now."
