I've been to most states, but now that I have kids, there are many I want to re-visit. I find it really hard to narrow down the list to 5, but if I think about where I want to take the kids during summer vacations when they are between ages 8 and 16, then here goes:

Maine
California
Gulf coast road trip (LA,MS,AL,FL)
Utah & Arizona
SD & Wyoming

Western AR is very pretty. The eastern part is one of the saddest parts of America I've seen.

But almost every state is like this.

I actually have little interest in the Dakotas, Montana or Wyoming.

I've been to many states but there are more places I'd like to explore in each of them.

States I've never been to that I'd like to visit:
Oregon
Washington
Utah
New Hampshire
Texas (I'd like to visit Austin)

States I've been to but would like to explore more - too many to count!
Maine
Florida (St Augustine and Key West, specifically)
South Carolina
New Mexico
California (SO much to see and do)
Colorado (Denver and Boulder. Summer visit for hiking and biking, not winter skiing)
Pennsylvania (more rural central areas, also spend time as an adult in Philadelphia)
North Carolina (western Asheville area)
Hawaii (I've spent lots of time on Oahu, but would love to see other islands)
Delaware/New Jersey (reading DCUM it sounds like there are many gorgeous places along the coast to visit like Stone Harbor)

I posted the Dakotas because I love a challenge. I am a reluctant traveler, but have managed to enjoy every state I've visited and or lived in...and I had a peripatetic upbringing.

And, OK because a good friend is from there, knows I've never visited OK and always tells me to skip her home state!


SD was a very pleasant surprise for us. Badlands, Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore. Kids were ages 9 and 11, which I thought was perfect.

I really like HOt Springs Ak. Lovely old hotel with interesting spa, my pick in Ak.

People are expressing opinions based on short visits to states. I'm sure there are beautiful parts in every state. I've never been to AR, but that picture is gorgeous. I'm sure there are parts that are not as pretty.

Also confused by this sentence! AR has some pretty places but probably half the states are more spectacular than it. And so many places in UT look like nowhere else on Earth.
