Stop putting the blame where it doesn't belong. I didn't see where OP specified the type of coat, but even if it was a desirable brand why would that matter? Is it somehow "acceptable" to take something that doesn't belong to you if it is a high end item? Nobody deserves to get their stuff stolen regardless of brand or cost, so this comment and the attitude it reveals is completely ridiculous.

OP here. Thank you so much for so kindly offering. That's really kind. She has a temporary coat though. One from her elder sister. A little oversized but that will do for now. We will be checking the lost and found that's for sure but there were no coats there yesterday. They will all also go on "display" as the year ends so hopefully it will be easier to find.

Send a note to the teacher, the room parent, after care provider and the school listserve.

Describe the coat so that others are aware that it is missing. We have had similar problems in the past and they have trned up.

We lost 4 coats last yr between 2 kids. I make sure to always have a few for each child

I agree with you, OP. It always bothers me when things go missing and never turn up at the lost and found. For the most part, my kids have been around affluent kids and communities. And, my kids only care about their stuff. It is hard to believe these kids would steal and the parents would not know that John's coat that he brought home is not one that you purchased. I would send it back to school immediately. My son came home one day with $5 that he said another kids gave him for being his friend. I am glad he admitted it to me. I put the $5 in an envelope with the kid's name on it and told my DS to give it back to him first thing next morning. On the few occasions that DS came home with something that wasn't his that he said another kids gave him or he traded something of his, I told him to give it back. Most of the time he is only concerned about his things. So, yes, it has really bothered me the few times DS' things went missing. Because I ultimately blame the parents who are either complicit in not ensuring their child return what is not theirs or they actively participating or condone stealing, which is sad.

My son is so absent minded. He has only once worn the wrong coat home. He also leaves them in the lunch room. Or puts them somewhere different. Other kids might see it and put it in a different place.

Sometimes kids do this innocently, is my point. I really don't think most elementary aged kids are doing this on purpose.

Check the lost and found in a week.

+1 I just can't imagine my kid showing up at home with an unfamiliar piece of clothing and just letting him keep it. DS was very upset last winter when his brand new UA hoodie was stolen at a soccer game. No way it was a mistake.

I too am amazed at how coats disappear--my son sometimes takes his off on the playground and then forgets it. In December! However, every time it has made it's way back to us, either through the lost and found or, more likely, hanging in someone else's cubby. It's definitely not malicious, but there are a lot of coats that look similar.

Little kids might not be as status conscious but teens get held up for their expensive name brand jackets and shoes.

Check the lost and found. My sister is a teacher and marvels at the number of expensive coats that turn up and linger there. Her school has a shelf in the cafeteria so it's not like it's out of the way for the kids to check.

PP here, the offer still stands if you need I have a size 7, it's in great shape, clean and we are smoke free, pet free home. I hope you find it in the lost and found or someone took it home by mistake and returns it.
