OP, not to be rude, but if you didn't want them to know your reproductive business, why on earth did you ever tell them about the embryos!!!???

Stare at her and say, "Wow. That's a REALLY personal question." And then walk away. Doesn't escalate the situation but would be clear to just about anyone.

I'd say "We had the embryos destroyed (or flushed down the toilet)".

Oh yeah and I so understand. We were in our 40s when we finally succeeded in having twin boys. We are old enough to be our kids' grandparents, but we're a very happy family. We still get asked regularly "Are you going to have more? Wouldn't you like to have a girl?" and on and on. Come on. We're already late parents. You want us to have new kids when we have our AARP cards? I know it's flattering, but come on.

We are one and done and EVERY single time we are around our parents/family we get the "when's #2 coming"? EVERY SINGLE TIME, so I can commiserate. I'm going to be very blunt at Christmas when it happens next (being nice or saying something like "we're enjoying DD for now, no plans for more" hasn't worked).

Don't say anything else but the truth. And as much of it as you want. Everything else creates unnecessary tension, more questions than before, hurt feelings, anger, whatever.

"Please stop asking this, it's very private and we don't want to talk about it."
"We aren't trying right now, we'll let you know whenever we feel like it."
"We aren't trying right now, please stop asking."
"We'll let you know if there's anything to know."

Whatever works for you. But honesty first. And keep it simple.
