I am a professional, and I have several years' experience, so I make close to six figures for 10 months of work. I deserve that, and I'm compensated for my work. I wouldn't have used the same wording as the teacher PP, but I get her point. I don't need a holiday gift either. My daughter, who's 10, will give a gift to her teacher b/c she wants to. But as an adult, I don't involve myself.

I'd rather get a thank you card, and while I love coffee, I can pay for my drinks. In fact, I do every morning.

Teachers in MCPS receive good salaries. My husband, also a teacher, makes about $10K more than I do. We're in the low $200,000s. I hardly see that as being poor.

So gifts should be given by children - not by parents.

I'm in a service profession - but with three degrees. So I don't really need coffee from Mommy or Daddy.

I wasn't the PP and you or her were talking about. But anyway, the PP also mentioned she gives $50 gift cards, not a tip to her . She compared the policy to others you would give gifts and or tips around this time of the year. Do they have a policy? And hate to break it to you. Many mail carriers, hair dressers and garbage collectors get paid more than a teacher. All the reason why I like to give the $25 Starbucks gift cards. My thought is every little bit helps. For a teacher to come on here and talk that way like she is some high class snob (making near 6 figures) and doesn't like gifts from students. That is so far off-base and unsettling.

They aren't allowed to. Not even in Virginia. Whether they actually do, despite the law, is a different question. It's also a different question for teachers in MCPS, evidently -- given that at least one person routinely gives gift cards of >$50.

Can you think of a reason why MCPS might want to have a policy limiting the amount of money a parent can give a public employee?

Well how about this. As soon as politicians aren't able to acquire gifts of unlimited amounts, THEN we can tell MCPS it's okay to limit it for teachers.
