They all wear shorts or something under them. Plus does it really matter in a girls' school?) My understanding from friends is that it's sort of a funny custom among the girls to keep the same skirt as long as possible, so they're probably just too small for some of the girls as well.

Doesn't matter how long the actual skirt is - if the girls want, they will go into the bathroom and roll up the skirt at the waist. If they want a short skirt, they will have a short skirt.

Maybe after 30 yrs the administration is realizing that a good fitting short skirt looks better.

Or maybe the girls are hemming the skirts.

I went to an all girls school in New York and I thought that what set us apart was that, at least in the school building, we had our skirts knee length. The administration did not tolerate the rolling the skirts up at the top. When the girls got outside the building, however, it was a different story. But at least in the building it would be nice if there were some decorum.

I wish I had been a teenage girl at Holton and could have shocked the grown-ups merely by rolling up the waistband of my skirt. At the public high school I went to, shocking the grown-ups required a lot more effort and commitment.

I don't understand the short skirts as part of a uniform with shorts/leggings underneath. It would bother me also .

The skirts are short but in no way sexy. There is no cleavage. They wear polo shirts. Never seen tight sweaters either. They are just comfortable in their uniform. Great education for girls!

Also because of some ill-spoken students with big bosoms, it seems. If the ill-spoken students had had small bosoms, they might have applied.

We went to see Pope Benedict when he came to DC. The Visitation students waiting to greet him at CUA had skirts so short that their gym shorts were showing even when they were standing up. It looks very inappropriate for the occasion. I have since noted that the other girls schools are largely the same. The St. John 's girls walking by my car this morning at least didn't have visible shorts hanging out but they were very short. The schools could do something about it if they wanted to.

Seriously there is not a lot of flashing of legs or bosoms at Holton. I don't know what it was like in the 1970s but not today. The skirts are just above the knee and have shorts under them. If you actually went there you'd see it. And my DD's fall sports team actually played their sport in a skirt over the shorts. Talk about modest - looked a lot more covered than some of the religious school players in shortie shorts.

As for the alleged "um" sayers who steered people around years ago, again, that's not the Holton of today. Those students are very poised and polished at public speaking by the upper school years. Again, come see and talk to some students, or attend a school play or art show or sporting match, before you prejudge based on one experience years ago.
